5. Common Symptoms & Troubleshooting
High-RPM Fuel Starvation / Engine Bogs at Full Throttle (Runs Normally when Squeezing Primer Bulb):
Cause: Stiffened, stretched, or fatigued internal rubber diaphragm, or debris trapped beneath one-way check valves restricting flow volume.
Troubleshooting: Manually squeeze the fuel primer bulb while the engine begins to bog down under load; if engine power immediately returns, the mechanical fuel pump is failing and requires replacement.
Fuel Flooding Crankcase / Heavy Smoke and Fouled Spark Plugs at Idle:
Cause: A ruptured internal diaphragm allows pressurized raw fuel to be sucked directly through the pulse port into the crankcase, causing extreme rich fouling on that cylinder bank.
Troubleshooting: Unbolt the pump from the crankcase with fuel lines attached; pump the manual primer bulb firmly and inspect the pulse hole on the rear of the pump. If gasoline squirts out, the diaphragm is blown and the pump must be replaced immediately.
External Fuel Seepage Along Pump Seams:
Cause: Loose casing assembly screws or degraded intermediate perimeter sealing gaskets.
Troubleshooting: Inspect assembly torque; if fuel continues to weep from casting seams, replace the complete assembly to eliminate hazardous engine bay fire risks.
