5. Common Symptoms & Troubleshooting
Relay Clicks When Trim Button is Pressed, but Motor Does Not Run:
Cause: Brushes worn past minimum service length, brush springs seized from corrosion, or armature seized from water ingress.
Troubleshooting: Apply $12\text{ V}$ power and ground directly across the motor's blue and green leads using jumper wires; if the motor remains dead or draws excessive sparking amperage without turning, the motor assembly has burned out or seized and requires replacement.
Motor Runs in One Direction Only (Will Tilt Up but Not Down, or Vice Versa):
Cause: Typically a sticking trim relay, but can also stem from an internal brush lead fault within the motor housing.
Troubleshooting: Reverse the positive and negative connections to the motor leads; if the motor now spins in the opposite direction, the issue lies in the relay/switch wiring. If it still fails to reverse, the internal commutator/brush assembly is damaged.

Cause: Internal bushing wear causing armature drag, or emulsified hydraulic fluid overloading the drive gear.
Troubleshooting: Check hydraulic fluid condition. Test no-load motor draw separated from the pump; if current draw exceeds normal limits ($>5\text{--}8\text{ A}$ no-load), the internal motor windings or bearings are degraded and require replacement.
